Tips for Campervan maintenance

With most people opting to stay home wherever possible and practising ‘social distancing’, your campervan’s probably not going to be going out much either. Whether you plan to SORN it or not, there’s a few things you can do to keep it healthy so that it runs okay when you do go back out.

Before the ‘off-road’ period…

1. Clean and flush the fresh and waste water tanks out and drain them as much as you can. Give the van a thorough clean -inside and out - to remove any dirt and grime that could get worse if left.

2. Make sure your seats are all clean (if you already have a set of Jackyards seat covers, this won’t be a problem!)

3. Open windows, doors and the pop-up roof (if you have one) to air it out - if the weather is good. Also check for signs of damp e.g a funny smell.

4. Check the windows, doors and seals for damage or leaks. You can soak the vehicle with a hose and ask someone to sit inside and check for leaks. Also check the wiper blades.

5. If the temperature suddenly drops, put in dehumidifiers or run the heating every now and again to prevent condensation building up on the inside.

6. Make sure the fridge door is closed if you have one!

7. Consider charging the battery every six weeks if you won’t be using the van at all.

Before you get take the campervan back out…

  • Check the tyres, oil and coolant and book a service with your VW dealer if necessary.

  • Open doors, windows and the roof again to air it out and give it a quick clean inside to remove any dust that’s built up.

  • Ensure all electrical appliances are in working order

  • Protect your seats with a set of our covers if you haven’t already!

Don’t forget - your van is also a handy little home away from home. If things get too much in the house, why not self-isolate in your camper like one of our followers Cy is? The driveway is better than nothing after all!
